Twitter는 작년 말부터, API의 중요 기능에 위치 정보를 추가해 왔다.올해는, twitter.com에서도 서포트 하고있다.그러나, 위치정보는 도시나 지역이라고 하는 막연한 것이었다.지금부터는 Twitter에, 구체적인 장소의 이름이 들어간다.
Twitter.com, mobile.twitter.com의 양쪽 모두에서, 트윗에 특정 장소(가게, 회장등 )의 태그를 달 수 있다고, Twitter가 오늘(미국 시간6/14) 블로그에서 공표했다.그리고, 이러한 장소의 이름을 클릭하면, 그 장소에서의 최근의 트윗이 표시된다.Twitter는, 지금 남아프리카에서 열리고 있는 월드컵에 딱 필요한 기능이라고 말한다.
주목해야 하는 것은, 이것이 Foursquare와 Gowalla― 2대 인기 체크인 서비스 ― 와도 제휴하는 것이다.Foursquare나 Gowalla의 정보가 첨부된 장소를 클릭하면, Twitter.com에서도 이러한 장소에의 체크인을 볼 수 있다.이것은, 어느 쪽의 서비스에 있어서도 득이되는 제휴이다.
새로운 위치 정보는 Twitter API에서도 똑같이 사용할 수 있다.TomTom 및 Localeze와의 제휴로, 향후 몇주 내에 세계 65개국에서 이용할 수 있게 된다.
이 공개에 맞춰서, Twitter의 위치 정보가 서비스를 더 많은 브라우저에서, 예를 들면 Internet Explorer나 Safari에서도(Chrome와 Firefox에서는 이전부터) 지원할 예정.또, 가까운 시일내에 Twitter Places가 iPhone, Android, BlackBerry용으로 각각 모바일 어플리케이션으로 등장한다.
이 모두가, Twitter에서의 위치 정보는 중대한 의미를 가진다.그리고, 이 위치 데이터가 Foursquare와 Gowalla 양쪽 모두와 연결되고 있다고 하는 사실이 훌륭하다.그래도, 머지않아 하나의 통일된 위치 데이타베이스가 필요하게 될 것이다.Twitter Places가 그 도움이 될지 모른다.
Google Places도 잊어서는 안된다.
